49'chevy one ton. this truck has a 9ft box. this box is factory. the frame has 1ft extensions bolted on. How rare is this? or is this the standard box for a 1ton

The box is fairly rare, but that doesn't necessarily mean valuable. As for the bolt on extensions, I've never seen them or heard about them. I wonder if somebody did their own modification of a 3/4 ton to use a 1 ton bed.

I have an unrestored '49 1-ton pickup and it does not have bolted- on frame extensions. I'm inclined to agree with FGT. What does the VIN tell you when you use the VIN decoder (Look in the Tech Tips).

As for rarity, there aren't as many around as the half-tons, but they're not exactly "rare" like Cameos or the late '20's roadster pickups might be. About the second or third show I took mine to, another '49 3800 (even red with black fenders, too) parked right next to me. Hmmm.

Regards,
John

Interesting to note, I have a '51 1 Ton Panel--unrestored. It has the "riveted" extensions. It also has front and rear shocks, but the VIN plate says it's a 1 ton. Maybe it was a factory thing; quick solution by using on-site 3/4 ton frames?

As for the box, they are scarce. The 9 foot box is the standard box for the 137" wheelbase. And as with truck values, they are worth what you're willing to sell it for. Condition is key, a good condition box will save you the headache of finding an alternate truck bed.

My '49 3800 pickup has frame extensions. I can't remember if they were riveted or welded on. I'll take a closer look and post a photo when I get a chance.

My '48 3800 1 ton pick up (9 ft Box) had the rear frame extensions riveted on. Factory set up. I made this truck into a rack body 20 years ago , because the bed sides were too rotted out. Finding good 9ft bed sides is quite a challenge. 1 ton frames differ from 3/4 ton frames. There is no hump in the frame over the rear axle on the 1 ton frame.

My 1-Ton also has the riveted extension on the rear of the frame.

I think we clearly identified that frame extensions from the factory exist, but does anyone know why? I mean I have a pickup without and a panel with? It's got me thinking!

I know this is another old thread but it has some good discussions and questions.

I have a 1 ton 52 Chevy pickup without frame extensions and a 51 GMC flat bed with them, though they've been torched some to mount a hitch.

Trying to swap the pickup bed to the GMC and want to know more about these extensions.

Does anyone have detailed drawings of the extensions in case I need to remake mine?

Any answers as to which model 1 tons have them and why?

Grigg

I'd never heard of these. I have 2 full trucks, a 47 and a 51. Also a 3800 49 panel. And a 50 ish 3800 frame. Tell me what I'm looking for and I will compare.

I wasn't able to get any pictures today but should tomorrow.

Roughly measuring (and from memory) from the rear edge of the rear spring hanger one truck has 9.5" of frame after that, and the other has about 21".

The short one then has a piece of lighter weight frame slipped inside of the main frame to add to the length.

I will need to replace my torched frame extensions on the GMC to use the pickup bed.

While searching for some info on a one ton bed and box assembly I came across this post. I have welded tails onto my frame since the originals had been cut off for a dump bed. I have left them long to cut off later once I start to assemble the bed and box. I was surprised to find the assembly manual I have has no drawings regarding the bed or box. I am now trying to fix up the cross sills ready for blasting and priming. Is there no drawings out there showing this assembly?

I dont know if this will help or not...Howard Knapp was a flat bed dump truck in its former life...

I had to add these to the back frame rails to get the 9 foot pickup box to fit...2x4 rectangular steel tubing left over from a former project...

rear view

good luck...
