They were designed to carry several 250-lb. blocks of bulk ice in a long, narrow bed with straw between them for insulation. The ice was cut off into 25 or 50-lb. chunks to stock the household or commercial ice boxes that were common back then before most households had refrigerators. They had another fleet of trucks that hauled coal on a seasonal basis, for the same customers who used their ice year-round.

'54 GMC 630 w/ 503 gasser, 5 speed, ex fire truck, shortened WB 4', install 8' bed.
'55 GMC 370 w/270, 420 4 speed, grain, dump bed truck from ND. Works OK.
