the 55.2 shop manual discusses the hydramatic, so at least that early - and I think they were available in the prior design, but I'm not familiar with that series

The first automatic in a GMC civilian truck was offered in 1953. It was offered in 1954 in Chevies. It was the Hydra-Matic.

First year for automatic Hydra-Matic in a Chevrolet Advance Design truck, Was 1954.
I heard some 1953 Chevy trucks were built with the automatic Hydra-Matic, though I have never seen any.
First year for GMC truck was 1953.
There was some GMC box trucks that may have had them earlier.

Here is one out of a 54. Believe it was also the first year for integral turn signals. This engine was bored 0.030 with new rings, bearings, valves, rockers and shafts
, fuel pump, carb, distributor, etc. The guy was going first class but when he couldn't find a starter (quite rare) he then went to an open driveline and 250 I6 instead. Hydramatic was gone through also. Tried to sell it for him on the Classic Forum On February 23, 2013 but no takers. He ended up robbing a few parts and then selling for $450 so he could use his trailer.

I had a powerglide in my 66 GMC 3/4 ton, now has a 700r4 from a '89 chev van, it hooked right up to the 305 v6, (with adapter plate that it came with)
