I didn't see any major chipped teeth, but that's about all I know to look for. Does anyone see anything that would give them cause for alarm inside this transmission? Here's a link to a video of me turning the gears with the cover off in each gear. You can't see some of the potential ussies until it's torn into, though. The synchronizer cones in the drum are one wear area to look at. Another that is specific to the overdrive is the blocker ring ( part #13), which must have the proper tension to allow the overdrive to work properly. Neither part are avaialbe new, bbut sometimes NOS parts do show up on ebay from time to time.

I have a manual online in a PDF that I believe shows how to test the solenoid, so I'll try that before installation. I have another question about a fuse, but I'll put that in a new thread so it will be easier to search in case the info might help someone else in the future... | | | | | Joined: Apr 2005 Posts: 2,102 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Apr 2005 Posts: 2,102 | It's a good idea to replace the seal for the OD solenoid plunger on the housing while it is out. If oil gets into the solenoid it will cause problems. You can take the cover off and check the contacts and clean if needed. To test the solenoid operation, ground the base, apply 12V to the #4 terminal. It should click in and stay in. The seal number is 3060CR, Napa should be able to order it for you. Fred

I suspect since the side cover is specific to the 55-57 SM318 and 319 and the solenoid was used on almost all R10s that the side cover gasket may be harder to come by. | | | | | Joined: Apr 2005 Posts: 2,102 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Apr 2005 Posts: 2,102 | Are you looking for a side cover or just the gasket? As far as I know the side cover gasket only comes as part of a gasket set. The side cover gasket is actually the same from 48 through 67 on Muncie transmissions. It would probably be easier to buy some gasket material and make one. Fred

If it'll work for this application I'll just make one. I called the parts house today and they didn't know how to look up the side cover gasket part #. | | |
