I forget as it has been over a year since taking the bed apart on my 1950 short-bed, but is the rear cross-brace primed and painted? I'm going to paint the other cross-braces with Zero-Rust like the frame but I forget if the rear brace needs to match the body color. Any help?

Yup paint it body color. I didn't because I had no idea how it was before. I did however put a roll pan on which cleaned in up and covered it nicely. There is about an inch of contrast between the roll pan and tailgate, but the contrast looks good. If you are putting a factory bumper or just leaving nothing on the back, be sure to paint it body color.
