I want to eliminate the mess and complication of the oil breather pipe hanging down from my engine. I hear that the engine (235 1955.1) will run better if I put in a pcv and send it back to the air cleaner. I remember rocker covers with a hole for the pcv. I've heard of rocker cover breather caps with a port for a pcv and no breather tube on the engine bottom. I have heard of pcvs connected to the hole the breather tube comes out of. What are my options?
Which is the best way to clean this up??

Should I put a cork in my breather tube hole and buy a used rocker cover with only a hole for the breather cap and then run a pcv line to the air cleaner?

What are the rocker cover configurations that would fit my engine? What years?

Thanks - Scott

I have the same mess, but the 54's prior owner punched a hole in the top of the cap on the crancase vent and then used a heater hose and plumbed it into the air cleaner unfiltered. The car ran okay like this and seemed to burn the crank case exhaust without a problem. I too would like to find a better solution. I guess misery loves company!

My friend modified his road draft tube by cutting off the side tube and welding a patch in place. He then drilled a hole in the top of the tube for the pcv valve. He loves the setup, and doesn't have a puddle on the garage floor to contend with.

Hey scdascda (what's that mean, anyway):

I have a Chevy pickup factory assembly manual. If you have this, look at Section 6, Sheet 15.02. These guys back then were doing this before 59 apparently eek and - while they didn't use a PCV valve in the loop, what they did do was hook up a hose from the valve cover and ran it to the air intake filter assembly. This is on both in-line sixes and V-8s.

If you want, I can scan the illustrations for you and e-mail 'em (I don't know how to attach them to this Board - seems complicated :p ).

Anyway, the drawings show two metal flanges about 1/2-inch by 2 inches with tube nipples soldered or silver brazed to them. One of these is screwed into the side of the valve cover (port hole and two screw holes, I guess). Same goes on at the top of the valve covers in each illustration.

I got this factory assembly manual kind'a by accident for my GMC. It's a Chevy manual and I almost sent it back, but I'll tell you, it's paid for itself much times.

Cheers!

Whotmewory,
Sounds interesting, although I don't understand why they would want 2 ports in the valve cover. Sure would like to see the picture and know why they did it that way. I have an assembly manual for 54, but it doesn't have the sheet you mention. Thanks - Scott

By the way, the scdascda thing....I have email at work and it is the first two letters of my first name followed by the first two letters of my last name. Oh..not enough letters for the board? I'll do it again..scda scda. I know..I know..Not too colorful, but my muscle memory is quick with the letters.

All:

I have scanned four illustrations from the Chevy truck Factory Assembly Manual 55-59, and one sheet from a 1954-63 Chiltons manual. I can e-mail them to anyone who wants 'em. But you'll need WinZip to open the Zip file AOL will use to scrunch 'em all up.

Here's what I have. These are all OEM illustrations, not street rod modifications. In a show I would guess they'd qualify as "original equipment." Who knows - maybe who cares?

- In-line 6 with Stromberg updraft carburetor with crankcase ventilation to intake air filter (2 sheets)
- V-8 with downdraft carburetor with crankcase ventilation to intake air filter (1 sheet)
- inline 6 modified crankcase vent tube with tubing run up and over to the intake manifold (1 sheet)
- inline 6 with crankcase oil cap REPLACED by a ventilation hose assembly from the vent cap port to the intake manifold (1 page).

Webshots took waaaaay too long to upload these, so I quit.

My e-mail address is [email protected]. Please put the word Stovebolt in the title heading so I know you're mail isn't SPAM. smile

Cheers from NASCAR country!

Go Panthers!
