What holds the shaft in that comes out of the master cyl.It is the part that has the grease zerk . in it There is a flat spot on it,but the M/S where it goes in is smooth. This is on a stock 56 ,3200.

are you talking the pedal pivot shaft? There is a bolt and a U-shaped washer that fits into a groove in that shaft (at least on my 58 and 59, I am assuming 56 is the same). Once that bolt is out, nothing is holding the shaft in place.
