The Stovebolt Site Forums The Shop Area Paint and Body Shop Rusting already - What the heck?

Wow, I am really disappointed right now. Only 1 month ago I painted my upper cab and I'm starting to see tiny rust spots. I don't get it. Took the whole thing down to bare metal, prepped and cleaned, applied etch prime and primer surfacer, then shot 4 coats of Dupont acrylic enamel. I mixed and shot everything as per directions. Huge waste of time and money. That stuff wasn't cheap.
I may as well have used a rattle can which by the way has lasted over a year now on my bed rails. What a drag! What did I do wrong?

got a water trap on yer air compressor? doesn't take much moisture in the air supply to cause problems - how long between primer coats and finish coat? was it high humidity days or low? does make a difference - also I try to always use an epoxy primer

Yep, I've got a water separator up by the compressor and was using disposable dessicant dryers attached between hose and gun.
I can't remember for sure how many hours between primer and T.C. but, definitely wasn't more than 24 hours. And I kept the truck in the garage during the whole project.
Pretty much I'm done with expensive paints/primers. Hello cheap Walmart paint and Dupli-color primer sealer.
It's a lot of time and money wasted but, I guess I should just be thankful I've got a truck to drive to work. It could be under 10 feet of water like many folks in the south.

Where are the water spots? Are they near seams?

I shot my cab in ZeroRust - no rustr spots - but the Crystal Coat hazed up after a year and now I am about to shoot the same paint from PPG on mine. (same irritation level though)

That's the problem right there. lol...

I left as much of the stock paint on as possible. Every time I do a job meticulously by the book, it never turns out as good as if I had cut some corners and just used my horse sense.

I'm from Wash. D.C. Ain't got no "horse sense".

Problem solved. A bunch of metal dust from grinding the welds where I filled mirror holes rusted. I had to go on the boat for a week, did the grinding and then the truck sat while I was away. Upon closer inspection it was just too weird to have rust coming thru 3 coats of primer and 4 coats of enamel. Then I remembered the grinding. Some 2000 paper cleaned it up.
Whew! That was a relief, lemme tell ya!

By the time i finished reading all the post, it was my thought that you had something on the paint not coming thru it, it takes along time to start to show rust from underneath, Glad it wasn't serious!

anybody ginding metal near your truck some could have landed on the surface after your paint and started rust seen it on new cars when a hole was drilled the filings trashed the paintmade it bubble and rust
