Cleaning DPF is hit and miss. If it's ash fouled or clogged from using the wrong oil cleaning is less likely to succeed. Low ash oil is critical to DPF life. Even when things work perfect DPF life is limited.
Clogging from excessive soot and the engine management fails to get into regen mode will driving or forced regen in the stall witha scan tool fails......then off car/ truck cleaning has a better chance of success. On car DPF regen normally runs about 500-1000 miles with injection of rich mixture to burn the soot off.
Some manufacture are doing better at diesels than others but EPA is making it tougher.
Add the extra cost of the diesel option, fuel cost over gasoline especially in winter makes the economics a problem.
Diesel are dying a slow death due excessive emissions problems with DPF and EGR problems and then the dreaded DEF ( diesel exhaust fluid) which has been a night mare for most manufactures. That's the system VW "forgot to install" and got caught.
DPF can cost $1000 to $3500. Some manufactures are offering factory reman.
DEF bottle, heater, pump, sensor $2000
EGR, EGR cooler, temp sensor, $900-$1500
EGR swirl valve with intake manifolds $4000-$7000
There are really good reasons Honda, Toyota and Mazda decided a few years back NOT to offer diesels in the US market.
