It had a SM420 behind a 235. The SM420 has a fixed yoke on the back, and the truck had a 2-pc driveshaft. The driveshaft had a slip-joint on the back shaft, next to the carrier bearing which also slides inside the bracket. So the driveshaft had "give" at the slip joint and the carrier bearing.. Now, fast forward to today. I just swapped out the old SM420 to a new T5, which has a slip yoke. So now my driveshaft has 3 "give" locations. The slip joint on the back shaft, the carrier bearing and the transmission yoke. When I drive it, the shaft is moving fore and aft and rubbing on the collar for the carrier bearing. I'm not sure what to do. Thinking out loud, I debated about drilling and pinning the back slip joint, but my fear is that it would then shove hard on the carrier bearing. Does anyone have any thoughts? I've never had a carrier bearing that slid inside its housing, so I'm wonding what would happen if I had it changed to a fixed carrier bearing?

It sounds like you have a worn out carrier bearing holder, which should be replaced with one a little more rigid. Jerry

However the carrier bearing is not usually asked to position the driveshaft or absorb thrust from braking or accelerating, this is the trouble. The front half of the shaft isn't anchored to anything except the bearing.
Is there any such thing as a "slip yoke eliminator kit" for a T5 transmission? | | | | | Joined: Jul 2015 Posts: 203 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Jul 2015 Posts: 203 | In looking at the GMC Service Manual, it looks like this carrier bearing is actually made to slide on the rubber cushion, which is a new one on me. I'm attaching a link which I hope works. Either way, the back shaft and the front shaft each have a slip joint, so if I get a new carrier bearing assembly that is fixed, it ought to do the trick.
