The Stovebolt Site Forums The Parking Lot '60-'66 Trucks Glove box door

The glove box door on my 1965 Chevy closes and latches but doesn't fit snugly and I have to pull it out at the top with my fingers and push the button at the same time in order to open it. Is there supposed to be a spring somewhere to push it out so that it opens when you push in the button? I assume it would make the door fit better and not rattle around also.

It was missing the glove box insert and I put a new one in, although it was the wrong one and I didn't realize it until I got it and put it in, but there are no other parts or pieces in or around it except for the door and the lock striker. The door has a flat spring sticking out of the bottom, but I don't see how it's supposed to go to do anything other than keep the door from opening too far.

I can check at home tonight. I expect to find 2 rubber bumpers on the top corners that tighten the door while closed and provide some push to open. But I also have to push button and pull with finger tips to some extent.

With age those bumpers get compressed and hard and no longer provide and push. One bumper broke off when I was recently replacing the glove box on my son's truck. Ordered a pair from Steele Rubber. They said being a small item they would not charge me shipping and would just put it in the mail instead. Jeffrey

Checked my 66 and recall with my 62. 2 rubber bumpers. Baby bumpers?

Mine does have to the two bumpers and they're dry and hard and were painted over. Thanks guys, I'll definitely be adding the to the 'to get' parts list.

I have to do the "push and pry" method on my '65 as well. It can be annoying but I look at it as part of the character and charm of the old truck.

and isn't the catch/striker adjustable?

I'll have to look to see if mine is adjustable. I could see it being more springy if it were adjusted back to make the door push back against the rubber bumpers more.
