I ended up with a Clifford Research 292 (4-bbl & headers) and Getrag 5-spd bought together for $2500. Looking around the web I find reference to 11 mpg being what to expect. Can anybody tell me what mileage they observed with a 292? Big sixes aren't famous for good gas mileage. The 292 we ran in a 1-ton dump truck got about 10 MPG, loaded or empty. With the OD 5 speed, I'd guess you might get into the mid-teens, maybe 15 or a little more at best.

| | | | | Joined: Apr 2005 Posts: 2,832 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Apr 2005 Posts: 2,832 | We pulled our sprint car with a 68 3/4T with a 292, 4.56 rear, BW OD and it was one of the best tow vehicles we ever used but never got better than 13mpg. Final drive ratio in OD was 3.20 and used 30 inch tall tires. Had a killer a/c unit and wish we still had it.

For instance, a 37-10 sequence would be a 3.70:1 ratio, 37 teeth on the ring gear, 10 on the pinion. a 41-10 would be a 4.10:1, etc. With the overdrive trans a rear end ratio between 3.30 and 3.70 would probably be ideal. The 292 has a lot of torque so a fairly high final drive ratio would be possible.

For the longest time I thought there was a hole in the gas tank. lol
