Took my wife's 54 for a short cruise this past w/e. And NO speedo? I have had a couple cars strip the gear in the tranny. Can you still get the gears? Any other poss?

It could be a number of reasons why the speedo is'nt working, here is few things to check.
Does the cable fit at both ends?
If so, check to see if the magnet is demagnatised inside the speedo.
Is the cable lubed?
Did the square cable break off in either end of the housing?
Is the back of the speedo housing were the square cable go,is it striped?
Or the other end were the square cable goes into the side of the tranny?
I think I might be missing somethings to check.

I checked the under dash, and everything looks fine and in place. I will pull the cable line off the tranny and remove the cable to check it out later tonight...
Just "one" last thing to fix and then were done...right...

If the cable is okay, check the speedo gear in the tranny, then the speedo itself. If you need any parts for the speedo itself, call Jeff at Bowtie Bits, part of his business is rebuilding speedos and gauges. Be sure to lube the cable with the proper speedo cable lube.

#11728 08/09/2002 1:42 AM | Joined: Dec 2000 Posts: 64 Member | | Member Joined: Dec 2000 Posts: 64 | An easy way to see if the cable and speedometer are OK is to disconnect the cable housing from the trans. and spin it with your fingewrs and see if the speedometer hand moves, or connect the cable to a variable speed, reversable electric drill and turn the cable that way. If the speedometer doesn't register you know to start checking the cable or the speedometer head, if it works then the problem is in the speedometer gear, either stripped, cable not engaging in the gear, or the transmission gear is loose on the shaft or stripped.
It should not be to hard to find the problem.
