out of nowhere the speedometer needle now bounces around 20 mph plus and 20mph minus of what the real speed is.
so, if I am going around 40mph, the speedometer bounces between 20mph and 60mph (more or less)
and the odometer no longer advances.
where should I start to try and find out what is wrong - since this worked fine for months.

1) Teach yourself how to disassemble, clean and repair what you have.
2) Buy a new one.
I have done both in the past. I prefer #2.

Just take your time, read, re-read the Tech Tip here in the Stovebolt, and if need be ask questions here. If you get, most likely when, frustrated...walk away for bit. I know I had to. Fat, stiff fingers and failing eyesight and slow wit were only part of the challenge with the tiny pieces.

Even new replacement can benefit from grease. The new one I purchase was dry as a bone.
Dry, kinked, rusted and bent cable can cause jumping needle.
The odometer not advancing is not the cable.
