1946 2 ton.

Can the rear axles be removed with the truck on the ground or does the truck have to have the wheels lifted off of the ground.

I also if the truck has to be lifted can I just jack up one side at a time and do just that side.Thanks. Jeffrey

Trying to be safe.

Axle shafts can be easily removed at any point, they carry no weight/load.
Remove the little bolt on hub caps and slide the shafts out.

The bigger trucks have "full floating" axles in that the hub is on two sets of bearings on a spindle to carry the weight. The axle shaft only transmits torque.

1/2 ton trucks and some later model 3/4 ton would have "semi floating" axles where the wheel is bolted to the actual axle shaft and would need to be jacked up to remove the shaft.

Always a good idea, however, to jack up subject wheel to keep oil off the driveway.

as stated, yes you can remove them with out jacking up, both at the same time, you will probably get some gear oil dribbled on the wheels though, and if not level, it may run out the downhill side.

Thanks guy's. When the time comes I probably will jack up one side at a time to reduce oil leaking out. Jeffrey

Even if you jack one side up, you are still going to get stinky gear oil over things. Invest a few bucks in one of these.

I have at least a dozen of them around the shop.

...and I'll bet it's used for LOTS of stuff. That would be a hand gadget to have to throw lots of stuff in as you dissemble and then use it as a wash tub for small stuff. Price is right to.

Also - there's a tapped hole, 1/2" x 20 in the end of the axle shafts. It's there so you can screw a bolt into it so you can grab onto it easily and pull it out.
