Can the rear axles be removed with the truck on the ground or does the truck have to have the wheels lifted off of the ground.
I also if the truck has to be lifted can I just jack up one side at a time and do just that side.Thanks. Jeffrey
Trying to be safe.

Remove the little bolt on hub caps and slide the shafts out. https://goo.gl/photos/FwbHAgamj2rPdLh99The bigger trucks have "full floating" axles in that the hub is on two sets of bearings on a spindle to carry the weight. The axle shaft only transmits torque. 1/2 ton trucks and some later model 3/4 ton would have "semi floating" axles where the wheel is bolted to the actual axle shaft and would need to be jacked up to remove the shaft. | | | | Joined: Jun 2011 Posts: 5,096 Crusing in the Passing Lane | Crusing in the Passing Lane Joined: Jun 2011 Posts: 5,096 | Always a good idea, however, to jack up subject wheel to keep oil off the driveway.

When the time comes I probably will jack up one side at a time to reduce oil leaking out. That would be a hand gadget to have to throw lots of stuff in as you dissemble and then use it as a wash tub for small stuff. Price is right to. | | | | Joined: Oct 2013 Posts: 331 Shop Shark | Shop Shark Joined: Oct 2013 Posts: 331 | Also - there's a tapped hole, 1/2" x 20 in the end of the axle shafts. It's there so you can screw a bolt into it so you can grab onto it easily and pull it out.
