I am unable to source either gasket for the old diff.
I found a center section from a wreck that had the 4:11
ratio. It will replace my 5:17 gears.

What are the recommendations from you fellas with lots of experience as to a liquid or paste type sealer.
Mabey a rtv type silicone, or something from the aircraft industry.
You guys in the US are fortunate to be able to get lots of stuff we in the great white north are unable to get.

Thanks in advance. Howie

What part numbers did you search for? I find it hard to believe these gaskets are not available, having recently purchased them myself.

I'd want to use a gasket even if Inhad to make them from the correct thickness gasket paper. The gasket thickness for the center section affects where the side gears are and how the axle shafts slide in. If too far off location the axle shafts will flex sideways and fret on the splines in the side gears. Not sure how serious a concern it is but if using stock gasket you don't have to worry much.

Here's some info from the post describing my rear gear swap.

Gaskets,
Pumpkin gasket; thin, and cover gasket; thick. PICTURE Ferl-Pro part numbers RDS 5090 and RDS 5988
I like to use Permatex #2 on most gaskets. Put a little on and spread it about as thin as possible with my finger, flip the gasket and repeat. Don't worry about loosing any when flipping, plenty enough stays on the gasket.

Also use the same Permatex on the bolt threads to seal them.

If I spread just the right amount on the gasket only the tiniest little bit squeezes out.

Also washed and removed any burs from axle and hub and put a new gasket on, Fel-Pro 55350. I didn't use any Permatex on the metal flange gasket because I'm not sure if it is a good idea? Time will tell if I should have. Did use Permatex on the axle flange bolt threads.

Thanks Grigg. I was disappointed that the two big supply chains
did not have a Fel-Pro listing for those part numbers. They both sell that brand and I have used them for years. I discovered yesterday that they can not supply a stovebolt side cover gasket. All part numbers they say are too old !!
All are available online from the US but have you ever tried to mail large gaskets. (another order for the Filling Station)
Good reminder of the thickness of the carrier gasket being engineered into the correct side gear location. It is thin but it counts. I will tap out one from roll stock.
Will also get a fresh tube of Permatex #2.
Thanks for your good advise. Howie

Manila file folders make good gasket material, if the correct thickness. Large gaskets can be rolled for mailing if not too stiff.

Thanks steve sr. Good tip, what topping of pizza worked the best?
Would not want heartburn when working on my back.
The local NAPA sold me a roll of gasket material so that will solve the problem, They had the axle gaskets but could no longer supply some of the FelPro items. For instance the side cover gasket is now only available in a complete valve grind set.
We have a winter home in southern Ca. and will buy lots of stuff again this Nov.
Thanks everyone. Howie

The guy at our NAPA store didn't understand what a side cover was. Once he stumbled on the "pushrod cover" he brought up the correct part.

I use "The Right Stuff" in lieu of gaskets for everything. No issues.
