Any one have any idea ? I recently rebuilt my 216 on my 40 chevy half ton pick up .. So i took i for a test drive and im getting a screching noise from what sound like the clucth rubbing .. I tried ajusting the clucth and no luck the noise still there heres the scenerio .. Im idleing no noise as i put into first no noise shifts into first good accelerate cant tell if noise is there but as soon as i let off gas pedal it sounds like something rubbing or scrapping i pop in the clucth and the noise goes away .. Same in all gears including reverse .. I havent rebuilt trans but seems like trans is good since goes into gear ok . In another chat some mentioned the pilot bushing causing noise and recomended a pilot bearing has any one experienced this issue .. And i have a new throw out bearing dont think thats it .. I did use a pilot bushing and seems everyone i ask also used a pilot bushing

Is the clutch plate installed backwards? I did this once... But it rubbed and screeched constantly unless the pedal was depressed. Terrible racket and it wrecked the clutch.

Find someone with a lift you can put it up on. Get a helper. Raise the truck up and start it. Have your helper engage the clutch and shift to various gears while you are underneath listening. You can use a long (18 to 24 inch or longer) screw driver or bar and hold it to different places on the bell housing and or tranny and the handle end to your ear. Acts like a Dr's stethescope. You should be able to pinpoint the area of the screeching noise. Good luck.

Could one of the bolts be a bit too long and dragging?

Finally got my truck on a lift to see where noise was originating from and per my mechanic coming from my rear end he said my drive line to rear end needed to be ajusted. something like it was rubbing against my carrige ? Im kind of in a situation where im wondering if my previous mechanic is to blame ? because before rear end started making noise i had my seals replaced on my ball joint and front pumkin gasket my rear end wasnt making noise prior to that . The mechanic that diagnosed my noise problem is a diffrent machanic than the one that replaced my seals. I asked this mechanic if he thought the work that was previously done had any thing to do with this problem of my rear end needing ajusting and he said he doesnt think so becuase if all the previous mechanic did was seperate and install gaskets then he should have not needed to mess with adjustment. Does any one have any input or expertise in work associated with replacing the ball joint seals and pumkin gaskets to know whether or not this would of caused my rear end and driveline system to be trown out of adjustment.
