Does anyone know what the proper procedures is,
to clean the 1954 Chevrolet Hydra-Matic Transmission 5 micron oil filter.
Where is the 5 micron oil filter located?
Or is the 5 micron oil filter also called the oil screen?

jorb,

I am not yet well-versed in dealing with the 1954 H-M transmission maintenance. Here are the only references to the oil screen that I can find (might that be the filter?).

Can you post a link to documentation that refers to the 5 micron oil filter?

I have not yet unpacked my H-M parts manual (moved from NY to NC). I'll be away from NC for a week, but, if I remember I'll check that manual when I unpack boxes of truck manuals.

The words screen and filter are quite often interchangeable. Jeffrey

I do not have a link, the info came from Gene at Restoration Hydra-Matics.
I asked him if there was a oil filter, He said' Yes there is a 5 micron filter.
I said' Where can buy a 5 micron filter.
He said' You don't replace the oil filter, you take it out and clean it with cleaning solvent.
I didn't get around to asking him where it was and what the procedure was.
Rather than bothering him again I posted the question here.
I looked at the Master Parts Catalog and the 1954 Chevrolet truck shop manual.
And couldn't find any reference to a oil filter in the H-M trans.
So I'm thinking he might have been talking about the oil screen.
One other thing, he did mention when he rebuilds a trans. he places a magnet in the oil pan.
He places the magnet in a spot so there is no interference with the tranny components when the oil cover is bolted on.
Since the oil pan is metal there is no need to use any adhesive on the magnet to keep it in place.
He did not divulge that location, but I think it is near the rear drain plug.
