Hi All
Recently on my 55 first series, 235, 3 speed, I had a new clutch installed while I had the flywheel replaced ( no room for this large a job, or skills on my side). Now that I have driven it a few times, since the new clutch I notice I now have an intermittent problem shifting into first gear when stopped ( traffic light, etc.) - The clutch that got replaced was badly worn, almost gone and before the clutch replacement, I never had any problems shifting to first ( or reverse ) and the 2nd and third gears were smooth as well. The new setup only has trouble after the first few shifts. I normally take her out for a 20-30 mile drive as usual and when she first starts, ( so far , only three trips since new clutch) it shifts without incident for the first half dozen shifts, then becomes increasingly rough, to the point of a few shifts (back to first) are actually sounding and feeling like a grind. the problem is only in an attempted shift to first from a full stop, 2nd and 3rd gear shifts are still fine. I am hoping it is a clutch and/or linkage adjustment. The shop has been great to work with, but I would like to understand what the combined experience in this group thinks before I go talk with them. I have put so much money into this truck since I bought it this winter, I am really hoping this does not signify a tyranny rebuild... - I appreciate any replies - thanks!

Joe

Push on the clutch pedal with just your thumb. (Your foot does not have a refined enough feel.) You should have 1/2" of free play before it gets hard to push. If you have significantly more than that, you will have trouble shifting while the engine is running. Adjust the clutch linkage until you have 1/2" free play.
