on my 55 ist series with 3 speed on column, shifting for first to second, I have to a straight h pattern shift, otherwise it sometimes locks between gears. is this going to be an easy fix? any suggestions what is causing this problem? if I am driving alone and this happens, it is a problem. you really need one person putting in the clutch while a second person plays with the linkage.

You need to pull the shifting box off the column & rebuild it or exchange for a rebuilt one. Also make sure all the linkage & bushings are snug.

They say money can't buy happiness. It can buy old Chevy trucks though. Same thing.

There are numerous parts which need to be checked for wear. All of the shifter rod ends and the holes in which they fit, the bell crank pivot bolt, the shifter box case (aluminum).
I would start by removing the shift box cover and make sure that it is lined up correctly when the transmission levers are in the neutral position. If everything in the box is not lined up, it may be as easy of a fix as adjusting the shift rod length at the shifter box arms.
If all of these items don't fix your problem, make sure that your rear engine mounts are like new. Any movement in the engine due to worn mounts will change the geometry of the shifter linkages.

"You have to do a straight h pattern"? Don't know what that means but you have to do an H pattern that's for sure. SOoooooo what's the problem? Are you trying to do a X pattern? Does the fact you used lower case h telling us something? Does it mean you are going from 1st to 3rd? (am I slow?) I assume all old column shifts have loose pivot points, bushings and etc. They ain't no speed shifters.
Also can you explain "locks" between gears. I was trained to take problems slow and easy and find out exactly what the complaint and manifestations are before moving into tear apart. I'm not tryimg to be a pain in the butt, but slow down here boys. Let's get some freakin info before he spends all his beer money and has a pile of little greasy parts.
Gman: If you do a nice easy H shift, is everything OK?

I think what he means by doing a straight H pattern is that when coming out of 1st going to 2nd he has to sorta go towards reverse then to 2nd.

I had a 63 1/2 ton that did this and it would get stuck. I had to crawl under the tuck and manipulate the shifter arms and get it unstuck. The shifter linkage parts were worn out.
