Hey all,

As with some of the other posts that i've read, I'm considering doing a bit of a fix and drive, instead of starting to tear her down. I would like to experience the 'stock' drive to see if I really want to make any upgrades. One of the things to consider is the requirements of the Ontario gov't. I was wondering if anyone had any documentation as far as a previous safety or safety check experience that they'd like to share? I'm assuming I will need to over-haul the brakes and ensure the lights are functional, but will I need to add more tail lights? Some kind of a rear_wheel cover? (just cab and frame) What about a cracked windshield?

This is my first antique vehicle, so i'm not clear on what can stay original and what needs to be upgraded.

Hey Goach, Ontario is revamping the entire safety check requirements, supposed to kick in on July 1. Up til now, you don't need to add lights that were not installed by the manufacturer. Not seatbelts either or signal lights. I am not up on the proposed changes, you'll need to check it out.
edit, cracked windshields will not pass.

Some things will depend on the mechanic that does your check. I think you will need some kind of fender or shield over the back wheels if you don't have that. It used to be that you didn't need a functioning speedometer which is kind of interesting. As Leo said, they are revamping the standards but hopefully the changes will be more for the more modern vehicles. One thing that is complicated is building a truck with a modified engine etc., especially with a substantially modernized upgrade.

Much discussion at my local car club over how all of this might affect modified street rods, rat rods etc. It's still not clear, but much of the suspension and height rules seem aimed at guys who jack up their 4 x 4's for mudding, etc.

Thanks Waves, I'm aiming to get my bolt inspected before July 1st! Hopefully I can find everything I need to get'er done.

As per the previous comments I think it has a lot to do who will be doing the inspection and whether you are city or country mouse.
I did the same thing when I got my truck and just wanted to get it certified and road worthy before deciding what I was going to do with him.
I needed new brake cylinders and king pins for mine to pass but, seat belts, extra turn indicators and pretty anything not original was exempt.
Emissions testing was exempt as were side mirrors.

As I said, it really depends on where you are getting it certified regardless of the MOT regs. Sooner rather than later would be good advice.

I did read through the new regulations and it appears that a leaking steering box will not pass. I think I will buy some John Deere Stock because their corn head grease is going to be in high demand! Also, they will be obligated to measure and record the drum diameters and the shoe thicknesses. So then there will be discussions about what drum sizes will pass. I see new Chev drums for cars and half tons advertised with a stated maximum oversize limit of .100" and .090". The shoe thicknesses are stated in black and white in the regulations.

Back in the 70's I had to get my 54 3100 inspected in Illinois. I'd leave a 6 pack on the front seat and when it came through the other end of the garage the beer would be gone and there would be a new inspection sticker on the windshield!

Good God It should be that easy today,I know,I remember.
But Now with the liability and lawsuit happy tugnutz,
most shops want to see if the work/repair was done before they will even Dreeaamm of putting their sticker on.
Unless obvious a restored/redone vehicle.
