Which gear you need? Drive gear or driven gear?

are all the drive gears the same and only the driven gear needs to be changed to adjust speedometer? what i mean is will any driven gear work albeit wrong speed indicated with the original drive gear.

my driven gear has 13 teeth and looks like

http://drmike.smugmug.com/Other/Truck/i-2MXVVq6/A

cant recall what the drive gear is yet as have to take it out but do remember its badly missing some teeth so needs replacing

1/2 ton 1949 4 speed

I have access to a 15 teeth driven gear and a 4 teeth drive gear....will they work together? i dont care if the speed is wrong (i have to convert to km/h anyway) i just need a moving needle

My thoughts are they will work. I'd say if you are getting them from the same person, they most likely are a matched set out of the same transmission.

1. The drive/driven gears are a matched set - matched to RPM-affecting features of the truck (rear-end-ratio and rear-tire diameter).

2. However, (I think) some sets of drive/driven gears might contain one gear that is shared with another set.

I dimly recall someone posting a gear-set parts list that showed part numbers for different combinations (I will try a search, but the info might have been posted in another discussion board).

I think the drive can be carefully punched/pressed off the forward yoke for the u-joint (I have only done it once - for my 1954 Suburban).

added later - not the charts I referred-to above: Master Parts Catalog: Group 4.337 (and more parts in 3.338)
