Takes a while. the wheels turn slow, but the process is not difficult. The clerks office was very helpful in explaining the process. | | | | | Joined: Dec 2015 Posts: 2,063 Big Bolt Forum Moderator | | Big Bolt Forum Moderator Joined: Dec 2015 Posts: 2,063 | welcome to the site, as stated, it is completely different from state to state. Also, here is Wa, the people in some offices are nicer than others and way more helpful! The closest one to me is known for not being so nice or helpful so a lot of people drive another 10 minutes to one of the others around! | | | | | Joined: May 2005 Posts: 8,983 Sir Searchalot | | Sir Searchalot Joined: May 2005 Posts: 8,983 | Never heard of petitioning a court for a title unless your relative willed it to you. Anyway, you need to start at the MVD and see what they advise. Probably some form of "bonded title" procedure. If the title was simply lost, that's real easy. Hope you have some form of Bill of Sale or papers saying you purchased it. In any case, there is ALWAYS a danger in buying a vehicle without a title. I NEVER do it. Someone can claim it. It is possible. If it was stolen 20 years ago, it belongs to that owner, period. Everyone else has been selling stolen property. A bonded title has notification requirements, a waiting period and a bond (insurance policy) so that no one is out any money except you who has to buy the policy and wait 3 years for a real title. Usually it was abandoned on someone's farm or the owner and all relatives have died, etc....or it was traded for a cow. Maybe you can contact the last person who had a title and get it transferred to you but that is risky if he wants it back. Be careful not to stir up a nest in court where you get stung.

It is not a court filing. It is a process managed by the county clerk through the MVD. It is very possible it never had a title. You can go to the MVD with the serial number on the door post tag. They use this for the VIN. If it had been title in your state it should come up. If it had been titled in another state you might not find it. You should also be aware the serial number on the door post does not match the serial number on the engine. They did not start matching numbers during manufacturing until much later. If no previous title is in the system just follow the instructions of the clerk to start the process to generate a title.

You can ask your county title clerk for advice, but I'd suggest just hitting your hand / head with a hammer. | | | | | Joined: Apr 2016 Posts: 6 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: Apr 2016 Posts: 6 | I ended up going through the court and the judge granted me a title after i had shown him 2 previous bill of sales and a state and nationwide search on the VIN #. was pretty easy. $350 | | |
