Ive had a look at the spare diff yesterday and its a better highway ratio than whats currently in it, as I have to redo the rear springs, I'm just going to change it out drum to drum, my question is it has a leak at the pinion seal, is the pinion pre loaded via a crush spacer in these or can I undo the pinon nut and lift off the yoke? and change the seal out?

Also and this is mostly for the Sydney Melbourne Brisbane guys

I'm after some 7.00 X 20 10 ply tyres

I'm very particular when it comes to tyres.

They must be black, round & new (not been in someones shed for 20 years) other than that I'm open to suggestions

Old world lamps and tyres have real brands but want more money than I'm prepared to spend

Antique tyres have Lu He brand for a more respectable price but I'd like to do a bit better

Does anyone have a supplier that's got good prices on these things, as I said before round black and new is my only stipulation

Hy TheYeti, I assume both the rear axles are Eaton, is my assumption correct? Most of the larger differentials do not use a crush sleeve, just a lot of torque to get the bearing preload. Have you checked the brakes on the "new" rear axle to make sure they are of the same type? As to the tires, in North America 8.25X20 seems to be the smallest size easily available.

Yeah the diffs are the same physically, I'm assuming Eaton (Im not a fan of their off highway stuff but I'm not about to reinvent the wheel for something else)

Yes the brakes are identical (unfortunately while the shoes are in much better condition (not oil soaked and have about 50% remaining the wheel cylinders are in similar condition to the other diff)

I've never seen a 5 ton '51 model Chevrolet. Made in the USA '51 Chevrolet trucks were rated no higher than 2 ton. I've seen some Canadian built imports rated as high as 3 ton. What series is yours ?

Hi Spanky, Mines 1100 series it is a factory 5 ton but in Australia they came in as rolling chassis and the bodys were built locally

I'm assuming the chassis etc was built in Canada as alot of the brake components are stamped as such

The "ton" rating is nominally what you could tote on the back of the truck. However it is no longer an accurate number and has become just a guide to general size of truck. The actual payload capacity is reduced by the bed weight, a considerable variable.

11,000 lb gross vehicle weight is total of everything, truck, bed, fuel, driver, load and everything as it rolls down the road. 11,000 lb less all that only leaves room for only a few thousand pounds of payload, something like your nominal "ton and a half" rating.

I looked at the photos and noticed the wheel cylinders. I've been overhauling mine for years. In fact I carry a spare kit on the road in case of a failure. Hone them out to smooth install cups with suitable grease, put never seize compound on the pistons and put them in. The never seize has stopped pistons from sticking in the bores and stopped rust. Have not had a failure on my daily driver in many years.

When I met with Andrew he told me there were a lot of diagrams etc on here, I'm chasing an electrical diagram for my old girl.

my original plan was to scrap the existing wiring but I pulled the gauges out yesterday and all the wiring in the dash is good and the bulk of it is else ware as well, its really only the wiring to the tail lights and some of the engine harness thats chatty.

What I'd like is a wiring diagram as I want to go right through it looking for faults etc and repair / replace the sections where there are issues and tidy a few things up along the way.

This might not be right for a 1.5 ton truck?

Tim, I think that is right for all sizes of AD Chevy with possible exception or variation on lengths for the COE.
Otherwise the length between tail light and the main harness would change with wheelbase but the front harness would be the same best I can tell.

Hi guys

It’s been in hiatus for a little while but we’re back on

I’m dropping in a V8 and one of the local requirements is a collapsible steering column.

I want to keep the factory steering and box, what are you guys doing for collapsible column?

TheYeti,
is that blue car a 37 Chev? The north American version ran that cowl crease detail back across the side door and the back window was one piece. That is really interesting.

I can’t think of the blue car your talking about, but I think your referring to the Matt black Australian body 37 Chev I have, and yes it has no door crease and the stereotypical Aussie duel rear window

I have a 38 ford that has the same

Most forums want you to host the images on another site, so that’s what I’m used to is all

I’m easy either way
