Does anyone know for sure if the brake hoses (need to replace both front and rear) are the same on these 2 trucks? Napa shows them for the 58 but not the 55. I found a set on Ebay for a 55/56 and they told me it was the same as for my 58... What I found on Napa did not jive with that though! You have confirmed what I thought! Now to see if I can find some local somewhere cheaper than Napa! I'm going to call Brake and Clutch in Seattle tomorrow, I am having a hard time spending almost 45 each for the fronts from Napa! | | | | | Joined: Nov 2005 Posts: 6,100 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Nov 2005 Posts: 6,100 | Hy 69Cuda, according to the Raybestos online catalogue the 55 6400 uses BH4497 for the rear 16 7/8" long, for the front it uses BH4900 17.69" long. For the 58 it lists the same rear BH4497, but for the front it lists two possibilities BH25664 20" long, or BH36548 18 9/16". personally I would order the lines for the 55 and see if they will fit on the 58 as well, the lines can be ordered through RockAuto or I'm sure Napa could cross those part numbers, hope that helps. | | | | | Joined: Dec 2015 Posts: 2,063 Big Bolt Forum Moderator | | Big Bolt Forum Moderator Joined: Dec 2015 Posts: 2,063 | Thanks, Napa's online info says for 58, the 4497 is for if it as a 3/4 or 1 ton chassis. They list the 4000 for the 2 ton. Difference is 3" longer and the one end is threaded for a nut instead of having slots for a keeper. I think I'll crawl under both mine tomorrow and see if the shorter one will work on the rear as well as see if the 1" shorter ones will work on the front! Napa has the 4900 for 11.43 instead of almost 46 for the other one! Same with the front numbers you gave me, the 25664 is 13 instead of 46! | | | | | Joined: Mar 2016 Posts: 170 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Mar 2016 Posts: 170 | I'll be interested in your findings as well. My 55.2 6400 already has new lines in the front, but the rear rubber line looks pretty old, cracked, and crusty. I ought to replace it before I even try to fill the brake system with fluid. | | | | | Joined: Dec 2015 Posts: 2,063 Big Bolt Forum Moderator | | Big Bolt Forum Moderator Joined: Dec 2015 Posts: 2,063 | online pictures of the ends for the UP4497 at Napa looks like it is what is on my 55.2. Paul, If it was me I'd replace ALL of the lines (steel and rubber) on your Frank'n truck, they fail from the inside out and you only have one circuit. It's easy to do and doesn't cost that much. No sense taking chances...do it now and forget it for years to come. The rear hose on my 58 is on the driver side and is the BH4000 (or Napa UP4000). The 4000 is longer and the frame end has external threads for a nut instead of slots for a keeper. | | | | | Joined: Mar 2016 Posts: 170 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Mar 2016 Posts: 170 | If it was me I'd replace ALL of the lines (steel and rubber) on your Frank'n truck, they fail from the inside out and you only have one circuit. I was downright surprised, but they must've been replaced right when they quit using the truck. They don't even have a spec of dirt on them. I will be sourcing some tube and nuts for the steel portions though. Many of them look like they'll strip out as soon as I start messing with them anyway. The tow truck driver actually asked me if he could just wrap around the rear axle with his chain, and I told him to go right ahead and crush the lines, and I didn't intend to use them. I just gotta figure out where all the fluid went. Since there are new lines up front, I'm suspecting the troubled braking system may have been what caused this truck to be parked long-term. So is Napa a good place to get bulk brake line tubing? The other parts stores don't seem to know the difference between metric and standard tubing nuts... | | | | | Joined: Dec 2015 Posts: 2,063 Big Bolt Forum Moderator | | Big Bolt Forum Moderator Joined: Dec 2015 Posts: 2,063 | looks like Napa has 25' rolls of tubing, that is on my list to go get this week. My dad bought some from Summit for his 40 Chevy car, he said it came with nuts. Looks like they are a lot cheaper than Napa.... | | | | | Joined: Mar 2016 Posts: 170 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Mar 2016 Posts: 170 | I'm seeing it on Amazon too. It looks like there's a copper/nickel alloy and a zinc plated steel version commonly available. The steel looks cheaper and I'd imagine more durable, though probably harder to work with and more corrosion prone. Let me know what you go with. My flaring kit is cheap, but has worked fine for copper tubing in the past. I'm not sure how well steel would work out, so I may lean toward the copper/nickel. | | | | | Joined: Sep 2001 Posts: 29,269 Bubba - Curmudgeon | | Bubba - Curmudgeon Joined: Sep 2001 Posts: 29,269 | CU-NI (NI-CU, NiCopp)
Check NAPA and other local auto-parts suppliers. I also got it at a good price at Autozone and Advance Auto (15-20% off on-line).

My dad has a very expensive flaring tool kit so, I am not worried about getting soft tubing to work with.
EDIT - I bought 3/16 tubing by mistake! should have bought 1/4" DOH!

Steel lines fail from the inside out, why take chances. While you have all the tools out why not replace EVERYTHING at the same time and be done knowing it's all done right and new. My .02 cents.
