Hi Guys

I'm new here so I apologize if this is in the wrong section or has been answered eleventy squillion times before.

As the title says I have a 51 Chev 5ton truck, its an Australian body but I believe the chassis came in rolling back in the day

I'm looking for front and rear wheel cylinders for the old girl

The front one has Delco made in Canada on it with the number 5453781 stamped in to it the bore is approximately 36mm in diameter thats aguestimatly about 1 3/8"

looking on chevs of the 40's they show this as a rear cylinder for a smaller truck but it looks the same and has a 1 3/8 bore
cylinder (is this the correct cylinder)

The rears are monsters again Delco made in Canada this time the number is 5453825 and it has 1 1/2 stamped in to the side (assuming that’s a 1 1/2" bore)

Can any one point me in the right direction for these bits ?????

Thanks in advance

Did a 41 Ford big truck recently and had to rebuild the existing wheel cylinders. Found the rubber cups at American Power Brake in Dallas, Texas and dust seals off of a later model Dodge. Bored and sleeved the cylinders and made the aluminum pistons. Check Hemmings for "Services Offered" as there are ones that rebuild cylinders---Apple Hydraulics for one and, they may stock parts for old cylinders and most likely stock parts by size rather than brand. Sounds like a fun old truck; good luck.

NAPA has them and offers online sales. You could also bore and sleeve the ones you have if they are not heavily scored. NAPA also stocks the rebuild kits.

Hy The Yeti, welcome, firstly the largest Chevrolet truck in the United States in that year was rated at two tons, in Canada a Chevrolet Maple Leaf truck rated at three tons could be purchased, these trucks were powered by a GMC engine. Does your truck employ two wheel cylinders on each rear brake? If you could provide us with the trucks serial number that would be a more precise way of determining what size of truck you have.

You need to use the 'direct' link on photobucket and link to it with the 'url' button on this forum.

According to my Hollander book, the same front wheel cylinder was used from 1937-1950 in most US trucks from half ton thru 2 ton.

1950 was the last year for Huck brakes in most US trucks but obviously your truck has them. I'd guess the new cylinders you found would work for you for the front if they will mount. I am guessing this because the bore is the same.

However, I would try to find the '37 to '50 half ton one somewhere before I'd order the Chevsofthe40s one.

Thanks Cletis

I have a friend who has a squillion Chevs hopefully we can find a sample that way.

As for the rears, mine are well, if I try to put it nicely "they're stuffed"

I dropped them in to a brake place yesterday and they said if I had better ones they could sleeve them and kit them for about $140 AU each, so based on the Napa price of $93 US plus freight thats not too rude. I picked up a complete chassis cut from the front of the spring shackles back this morning

It's from a truck thats been "sheded" all its life (not that that has any real relevance to whats inside the drums) and I'm told stopped alright before he pulled it apart so fingers crossed they are salvageable.

Also to make everyones life easier I've created a photobucket album just for the truck

Hy TheYeti, your rear brakes are Bendix so they have two different wheel cylinders per wheel. The Bendix crossover tube on your truck uses nuts that have a different thread pitch than standard brake line nuts, so do not throw the line nuts away. If you have to make new crossover lines you can transfer the old nuts to the new line. If you need part numbers for the wheel cylinders I can provide those.

You my friend are a legend.

Thank you so much.

I'm assuming then that the fronts should be

RAYBESTOS WC14481 Front; Base Model; 1-3/8" Bore $64.79

I'll get in contact and get a freight price to Australia and go from there

Hy The Yeti, actually my United brake catalogue shows a 1" bore wheel cylinder for the front of your truck Raybestos p/n WC14497, but the parts book o.e.m. 5453780 equates to Napa p/n UP14481, the Raybestos number would be WC14481. If you have a known cylinder there now then replace with the same size as that.

Thanks 3B

Mine rough out as 36mm so about 1 3/8"

Mines a 5ton so I would expect it to be a big gigger

I'm loving this Rock auto you put me onto, I'll put together an order over the next week or so and get it on the way

I just pulled apart the diff I got the other day and the wheel cylinders are better but still US and will still need sleeves and new pistons etc, so I'll order all 6 through Rock
