For helping keep this great
old truck web site
on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Mar 2014 Posts: 92 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Mar 2014 Posts: 92 | I'm trying to help a friend identify a transmission that he said came out of a '49 GMC, so he can put it up for sale. He says it is a 5 speed. What casting numbers should I look for, and where should I look? Thanks in advance. J R Patton | | | | | Joined: Mar 2004 Posts: 6,214 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Mar 2004 Posts: 6,214 | Somewhere on the side of the box there will be casting numbers (my guess is the passenger side) and then somewhere there will be a stamped serial number (could be anywhere on the main box). A putty knife and a wire brush are your friend...it's easier for you to tell us what you have than for us to guess. After 60 years there is no telling what trans has been swapped in or out. I will go look at it tomorrow and report back. How many shift rails does it have? Al or iron top cover?
Px would be great, top, rear, sides.

Either Direct Drive, or Overdrive. If the truck is still around, it would tell you on the plate that was on the back side of the glove box lid. 5 speed transmissions were standard equipment in the 450, & 470 series trucks. My 52 model 470 series, has a Clark 205V 5 speed in it. For 1952 there were model 204VO, 205V, 207V, & 207VO transmissions available. | | | | | Joined: Mar 2014 Posts: 92 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Mar 2014 Posts: 92 | I'm still waiting on him to clean up the tranny. I will get pictures and numbers when it's cleaned up. Gary said he replaced the tranny thinking that it was what was causing a "growl". Come to find out it was the rear end that was bad not the tranny. It was in an old wheat truck that he used for roofing, hauling shingles to the dump. Truck that it came out of was sold a few years ago. Thanks for the help. I will keep you posted. JP | | | | | Joined: Mar 2014 Posts: 92 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Mar 2014 Posts: 92 | Well Gary was gone over Easter and didn't get the tranny totally cleaned up. BUT he did get the brass plate on the lh side of the case cleaned off and it is a Clark. From what I get from Spanky's post it must be a 207V of some sort. The tag reads "Model 207 VO 1, (another number stamped 2241891) then Serial #12513OK". Below the brass plate is a number that is a casting number of 5455. The top cover is iron, and Gary thought it had 3 shift rails (what he thought were the shift rails). It still has the park brake drum with it. PTO is still there too. He said it was a 3 ton. I will try and take pictures asap. (My job keeps getting in the way!) Thanks to all. Jon Patton Tribune,Ks.

They were common in military vehicles and are a good way to make an old truck go a little faster. | | | | | Joined: Mar 2014 Posts: 92 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Mar 2014 Posts: 92 | Any idea on what it's worth, (or is it ok to ask on Stovebolt)? He's not trying to make a killing, just a fair price. Thanks in advance JP | | | | | Joined: Apr 2004 Posts: 5,074 Authorized Pest | | Authorized Pest Joined: Apr 2004 Posts: 5,074 | This is something that just came in for the Lots O' Links page. I haven't really checked on it yet but maybe it has some good information that will be of help. Determining Classic *car* value ... since there is a truck on the main page, I would think it should really say classic VEHICLE. Let me know if this is any good ... and I'll add it with the next update to the Links page. Peg

Jon, If you want and need the trans figure out what it's worth to you and make an offer, the worst thing that can happen is he says no and then you keep pecking away with offers until you are both happy or you give up and move on. I've seen transmissions as cheap as "free" (only worth about $2.00 as scrap) and up into hundreds of dollars. I'll have him set a price that he feels is fair and go from there. I'll probably list it on the swap meet later.
