For helping keep this great
old truck web site
on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Mar 2011 Posts: 667 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Mar 2011 Posts: 667 | Howdy all --- seems I read somewhere, long ago, that when swapping bias ply, tube type tires for tubeless radials on the front...it was necessary to adjust the camber a bit.
Does anyone know anything about this? I've done it on my '46 Chevy 1.5T school bus which is now powered and geared to make highway speeds.
Thanks in advance. | | | | | Joined: May 2005 Posts: 8,878 . | | . Joined: May 2005 Posts: 8,878 | See how it drives and handles. If it doesn't feel right have a front end alignment done by a reputable shop that can make adjustments based on their past experience and not simply "by the book".
With all the changes and work done might be smart to have an alignment done in any case. | | | | | Joined: Mar 2011 Posts: 667 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Mar 2011 Posts: 667 | Hoping to at least get some guidelines. I talked to a couple of shops with all the "modern" gear who said they don't even work on anything with solid axles(?). Might need to check with a few big rig shops. | | | | | Joined: Sep 2001 Posts: 29,270 Bubba - Curmudgeon | | Bubba - Curmudgeon Joined: Sep 2001 Posts: 29,270 | Are you asking about front-end specs for a 1946 1.5 ton truck - standard/original-style front end? | | | | | Joined: Mar 2011 Posts: 667 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Mar 2011 Posts: 667 | Negative. I have the originals specs. What I am looking for is a guide that will tell me about what changes need to be made to the camber (and possibly cater) to compensate for the switch from bias ply tube tired to tubeless radials. I read a note a couple of years ago that indicated fairly different settings needed to be applied in order for such a swap to track properly. Problem is...I can't find it now. | | | | | Joined: Sep 2001 Posts: 29,270 Bubba - Curmudgeon | | Bubba - Curmudgeon Joined: Sep 2001 Posts: 29,270 | Here is a H.A.M.B discussion on that topic. I agree that the camber/caster does not really need to be changed for normal driving and an original front end. I adjust the toe-in to provide a maximization/minimization of ease-of-steering/road-wander at 60 mph on a 2-4 lane highway. | | |
