| | | | Joined: Jun 2010 Posts: 26 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Jun 2010 Posts: 26 | With my driving needs, and my location, a backup camera has been in the "back" of my mind as I'm trying to repair or replace my previously, badly damaged rear door. Once this repair is complete, I'd rather not take the chance of backing into something and ruining the repair. If anyone has installed a backup camera, or has considered doing so and has some research, I'd greatly appreciate any knowledge you can share with me. Thanks.

I have been checking on backup (and now side) cameras for over a year.
A lot of changes/advances are taking place, especially with respect to multiple cameras, the "read-out"/viewing device, and with lowering costs.
I will not be buying anything for a year or two, but now a license-plate frame w/built-in camera looks good.
- the viewing device might be a GPS unit (the larger the screen the larger the $$)
- the connection of the camera to a viewing device is another issue - Wi-Fi or fiber-optic line/cable

Our fleet, mostly Fords, were upfitted after purchase. Seems Ford has caught up to the market and the cameras are almost standard equipment. The models we used to install were HitchCams. In the beginning, they were small cameras with a 5" screen on the dash. After a while, they went to a 3" or so screen on the dash. All versions worked great! Still do. These days, the camera is in the rear view mirror. Here is the earlier version we used to buy: http://www.topshop-mn.com/reverse-sensor-systems Seems like they are harder to get now that OEM already has them upfitted. The wiring is from front to rear with a weather proof connection at both ends. I believe the longest cable you could buy was something like 60', which works great for trailers and such! Simple connection at the power source, usually under the dash. A signal from the reverse circuit actuates the camera. | | |
