Anyone replace one of these? I've looked here and on the internet as to where to get a replacement for mine with no luck. I have the drive shaft off to replace the U joints and remove the 60 years of accumulated crapola. Unscrewing the retainer I noticed mine is in none too great shape. It LOOKS to be cork, looking at the 1955 Online Chebbie shop manual, page 4-65, Fig 111 it points to what they label a felt packing and below in print they call out cork??

Any direction is appreciated.

Finster

I assume you have the SM-420 4-speed transmission in your 3600. If so this should help...

Group 5.556 Cork Washer

56-59 3E w/ HD 4-speed...p/n 3705197...1-3/4 O.D. - 16 teeth

The cork washer is backed up by a steel washer.

Right on that p/n 3705197 - I did a quick NOS search and Whisler Chevrolet in Rock Springs, Wy. is supposed to have three in stock. The phone is listed as 307-362-5677 . I dont know if these are still available through any of the usual parts stores.............

If that doesn't work out, let me know as there are some other options we can try. Good luck.

Well, no luck with either place mentioned. I called Whisler Chevrolet and the guy kinda chuckled and said they don't handle old parts anymore. The other, Friesen Chevrolet, I left voicemail with parts and haven't heard back. I found one on Flea bay for $1.96 with $15 shipping frown I have tried to contacted the seller through Flea bay and the dealership to see if we could somehow reduce shipping but no reply. I even said I'd take a differential carrier gasket for my H052 but still silence. If I remember correctly the washer was listed for something like $24. I'm about ready to get some cork and make my own.
My brother in law has a tranny shop in southern Maine and he hasn't been able to find anything either. I can get the diff gasket at Rock Auto but they don't carry the packing.

I just checked with Friesen Chevrolet.
They still have :
(3 ) - GM # 3705197 in stock
(2 ) - GM # 3705196 in stock

They are a very busy dealership.
I suggest instead of leaving a voice mail expecting a
call back. Call them during normal business hours.
Just ask for the parts department.
I'm sure they are not into playing phone tag

Dan's GM Obsolete
Chinook, Montana
phone: 406-357-2615

Dan's has: (5) - GM # 3705197 in stock
Dan's has: (2) - GM # 3705196 in stock

Thank you very much.

I did call them during business hours, the person who answered the phone sent me to parts, hence voicemail.
