Have repair methods. | | | | | Joined: Feb 2004 Posts: 29,740 Kettle Custodian (pot stirrer) | | Kettle Custodian (pot stirrer) Joined: Feb 2004 Posts: 29,740 | If it can't be straightened up with a thread chaser or a thread file, replace the spindle. Do you really want to bet your life on a flaky thread that might let a front wheel come adrift? http://broadwayrental.com/wp-content/uploads/CIMG0050.jpgJerry

Any opinions ? | | | | | Joined: Feb 2004 Posts: 29,740 Kettle Custodian (pot stirrer) | | Kettle Custodian (pot stirrer) Joined: Feb 2004 Posts: 29,740 | Are the spindles so scarce or expensive that replacing it isn't an option? There is probably a very good reason that particular thread size was chosen, I'm sure, and creating a one of a kind spindle on only one side by going to a different (smaller) thread is just asking for trouble. I'm going to climb way out on a limb and assume "82 p3032" means it's on a 1982 truck? If it was on a 1902, 1912, 1922, etc. vehicle, I might be able to understand a heroic effort to salvage a part, but not for something from the 1980's. Jerry

If it absolutely had to be reused I'd probably turn the old threads off, weld to build up the diameter, and turn true and cut new threads back to stock size. I'd feel better about a new part than I would the repair. | | | | | Joined: Feb 2004 Posts: 29,740 Kettle Custodian (pot stirrer) | | Kettle Custodian (pot stirrer) Joined: Feb 2004 Posts: 29,740 | Machine the spindle to remove all the threads, weld it up with the proper alloy, anneal, heat treat, and normalize the part, then cut new threads. You're talking about a thousand dollars' worth of labor to salvage a part worth a couple of hundred at most, and a definite "maybe" that it's going to be safe afterwards.
Do you also draw to an inside straight? Let's play some high-stakes poker! Jerry
