Im a bit thick so wondered exactly what a kick down does. I have a TH350 in my truck with a mickey duck shifter which allows the engine to start in any gear. Ill soon change that with a Lokar shifter and bench bend stick. I have to find a wiring diagram from the shifter to my ignition switch on the column. All from a 75 truck in a 53 1300 and a 250 in line six. It's also called "passing gear" by some folks. The shift points are controlled by the modulator, which varies pressures according to manifold vacuum.
On some transmissions the kickdown cable is also the throttle pressure control, and must be adjusted to a very precise position for proper functioning of the transmission. Ditto for throttle linkage on the Powerglide, and the Dual Range Hydramatic. On the TH-350, it's only for a forced downshift.
