I'm attempting to remove the harmonic balancer from a 1956 235. Ive got the puller connected and all cinched up -- the problem is -- even with a 2 foot long cheater bar I can't get anything to even budge. How much pressure should it take???

Thanks

The previous owner may have put locktite on the crank shaft to prevent the balancer from coming off on its own. Try applying heat at the mating surfaces and then use your puller and see if it then comes free.

Tighten the center bolt on the pulle and TAP firmly on the end of the center-bolt
tighten a little more and tap,, tighten, tap... see if that helps

twe56,

If the good suggestions above do not work, put as much torque on the puller as you can with the 2-ft cheater bar and then leave the tensioned puller in place overnight. This popped one loose for me once.

Good luck,
Tim

Mechainiac Said it all. Good and tight and hit the end of the puller shaft with a hammer. May take several attempts to tighten and whack before any results are visible. If it will tighten a little bit each time it means it is moving in the right direction.

There is no mechanical problem so difficult that it can not be overcome by brute force and ignorance.
