Hood insignia and side fender insignia's on '56 3100 require some painting (in indented areas) of a dull black color, and an insignia red color on the bowtie. What is the best way to paint these areas--mask and spray or paint by hand? Appreciate your ideas. smile

Use sign painters paint, it sticks to smooth sufaces. Steady hand & brush, or airbrush/masking tape/X-acto knife. Brian

Sign painters paint--great idea! Is this paint available at any paint store? Thanks for the reply!

The paint I used was semi-gloss in a spray can from the local paint and body supply outlet.

I did my emblems, locking gas cap, after-market step plates, etc. by rough masking the areas I didn't want painted, spray painting, and then using thinner on multiple folded paper toweling (that way you have an absorbent, pseudo-flexible surface that won't bend down into the painted areas) over the raised areas after the paint had set but was not totally dry.

That way you have a nice smooth blended edge that doesn't look masked. The hardest part was the hood ornament. That one was a PIA.

I did my Offenhauser cast aluminum valve covers the same way after painting them with a brush--POR 15 engine paint.

Just take your time.
