| | | | Joined: May 2002 Posts: 8 Member | | Member Joined: May 2002 Posts: 8 | I have a 51 that someone had put a 55 2cd bed on. the frame was cut over the axles ( to lower the bed enough) and metal scabed in under the cut to beef up the frame. I am going to fix this. My question is with my very limited funds I was going to atempt to use the existing bed sides.I know the difference in the depth of the bed is about 2" Has anyone done this before? My goal is that after all is said and done that the the bed will look like a 55 1cd not true to the original 51 but certainly better than what it looks like now. | | | | | Joined: Jan 2002 Posts: 398 Member | | Member Joined: Jan 2002 Posts: 398 | Hey D, how's it goin'? I have heard that apparently, they kept the same basic bed design on GM trucks from 1954 all the way to 1987 (last of the "real" stepsides). The only difference I could see is that the '54-'55 1st series bed has the shape of the fenders "embossed" into the side of the bed, while the newer trucks use a flat bedside. Is it the correct thing to do? No, but if you aren't doing a 100 point resto, who cares? It's your truck, anyway! I had thought of just this same thing, as AD trucks up here in Ontario don't seem to survive with their original beds. I would suggest hunting down an original '54 or '55 1st series and inspecting/measuring the bed mounting points-this will allow you to approximate the stock height when you fabricate the new mounts for yours. | | | | | Joined: May 2002 Posts: 8 Member | | Member Joined: May 2002 Posts: 8 | this will definately take some effort to pull off. just trying to save the old girl from the crusher anyway. she was in pretty sad shape when i got her. no motor, wiring shot,lower cab shot, she was even shot for real five times. i thought of just leaving the bed as is because she'll be a work truck (no loafing around here)just want it to look a little more original. I'll let you know what i come up with | | |
