Yes could just direct the inflow hose and the outflow hose to the heater body. Do you mean remove something from the Ranco valve - yes, the rubber seal can be replaced. The part numbers are listed in the article. You will not be able to get that shaft out like your pics because there is no reason to remove the back of the tube. If you do it like the How-To, it will all come out perfect, but be very light handed on the tabs. They break very easily. Yes it needs to swivel as it is a metal to metal seal, no rubber. The tangs need to be bent just right to keep the shaft aligned. Easier to assemble the new seal, then resolder the cap back on. Just got mine from NAPA, easy fix.
I was also able to solder a new capillary tube onto my Ranco and refill with ether. Nothing on the inside of the tube. It can all be done without removing the end cap.
