I've probably read every page of this section of the forums to include all the old original shop manuals and RPO code sheets.
My question is if any 1.5 tons came with the the 2 speed rearend option? Mine has a 2 speed and I think it's from a 2 ton. However, it has all the right dash linkage, vacuum controls and related bits. If it was a swap done by a farmer he did a good job. | | | | Joined: May 2005 Posts: 8,877 . | . Joined: May 2005 Posts: 8,877 | The 2 speed was a heavy duty option on the 1.5 ton. | | | | Joined: Sep 2001 Posts: 29,262 Bubba - Curmudgeon | Bubba - Curmudgeon Joined: Sep 2001 Posts: 29,262 | Tom, I see why you state that you could not find that 2-speed option (RPO-202) for your 4400 1.5 ton truck in documentation. 1953 RPO-202 for 5000-6000 series (no mention of 4000 series). An optional single-speed rear axle is the only rear axle option shown for 1953 41xx series and the 1953 44xx series and the 1953 45xx series but the optional single-speed rear axle is shown for the 1953 53xx series 1.5 ton Special. . The same 1953 specifications manual shows that 2-speed rear option as only being available for 5xxx-6xxx series 1.5 & 2 ton trucks. Maybe you do have a factory installed 2-speed, but (as your suggest) that one GM booklet seems to indicate your 2-speed might be a good after-market conversion? Maybe someone has access to a 1953 Salesman Truck Data Book (mine is in NC - Brad?). | | | | Joined: May 2005 Posts: 8,877 . | . My initial answer was based on my memory that some 1.5 tons could have had the 2 speed, I did not remember or know there were variations in that option or availability over the AD years. Sorry for the incomplete info.

Do the front bearing dust caps have bolts holding them on ? | | | | Joined: Dec 2015 Posts: 7 New Guy | New Guy Joined: Dec 2015 Posts: 7 | Thanks for the replies, I believe it to be factory or at least a later installed at the dealer option. It's just too clean. The front hub dust caps are threaded on not bolted like the 6400's.
The truck has the original 216 with an old brass rebuild tag. 60 bore, 20 mains and 40 on the rods. No idea if its had insert bearings installed!
I'm attempting to link my photobucket pics but the link won't paste.

The dump bed is a perfection brand aftermarket add on. I do not much care for the added weight and clutter so I'm going to sell the PTO and all related dump bits to return to a cab chassis configuration.
I tore all the old wiring out today. Cracked, spliced frayed cotton loom wiring mixed with household grade wire. It's interesting the things farmers do. He also wired the heat riser plate open long ago.
If anyone will need a home for dump parts just let me know. I could sure use a few bucks to finish getting her road worthy. Gonna be a daily driver since I work onlyna few miles away. | | | | Joined: Dec 2002 Posts: 2,538 'Bolter | 'Bolter Joined: Dec 2002 Posts: 2,538 | What type of bed will it have on it ? | | | | Joined: Dec 2015 Posts: 7 New Guy | New Guy Joined: Dec 2015 Posts: 7 | Does anyone know what this sticker says? It's above the starter, found it under a layer of crud. Theres also a brass rebuild tag on the engine with rod and main specs, no block number behind distributor pad so I think it's a replacement factory engine. http://s393.photobucket.com/user/th...60106_143133262_HDR_zps9acwwzse.jpg.html | | |
