Do you guys have any recommendations/suggestions for a replacement carb for the 235 I am installing in 1950 3100? I have read many positive things about the Carter YF's and negative things about the stock Rochester (even rebuilt). The Roch carb I have is full of soot and grime and has not been run in years. Thanks to all!

What year 235 are you installing into your 1950 3100?

What year intake manifold do you have?

If you go with a YF (various versions from 1940s to 1970s), you might want to get one from an engine similar in cubic inches to your (unless you are able to modify/change jetting).

As you noted, Carters are more highly regarded than Rochesters. I have always had/used Rochesters - the one I found on my 1948 216 (in 1969) leaked at the top/bottom joint. My 1954 and later Rochesters do not leak.

Interesting, the Rochester on the original 1950 216 leaked and ran like crap. The 235 I am using is a 1958 model so I assume the intake is original. If the later Rochesters were better, I might try a rebuild.

I'd try a rebuild.

re. Rochesters. I'm batting 2 for 4 in getting a good one.

All 4 that I have experience with are older manual choke models.
1 is the smaller 216 version and the other 3 are the larger 235 versions.
The one I rebuilt on my 49 216 runs flawlessly. I've got approx. 13K miles on it since rebuild and so far so good. No problems with it.

The 3 I tried for my 54 235 have differing problems. One hesitates in the acceleration circuit and I can't get it right, another has vacuum leaks around the throttle shaft and the other has warped body halves and leaks. I was able to make 1 good one but I need 2....
Rebuild kits aren't expensive and always worth a try, buying so called rebuilt carbs can be like buying a pig in a poke, you won't know till you buy it.... And they ain't cheap....

Good luck
Dave
