Happy New Year Folks,

I can use some help to identify the type of vehicle that donated its rear end to my 1950 3100.

The carrier housing is a 10 bolt, 8.2 inch with a casting # N3833443. It has parallel side ribs which indicates a Type C.

The top of the axle, on the passenger side, is stamped HI0608W. The 'I' may be in question.

The brake drums are 9.5" X 2".

The wheels are 5 bolt (lugs).

My research tells me it could have come from 10 different mid size vehicles from the mid '60's to early 70's but I'm hoping someone can narrow it down further for me.

Thanks
joep

First, welcome to the Bolt.
I believe the rear end is from a 1966 Chevy G10 van. This Stovebolt post certainly narrowed the search.
GM 8.2 10 bolt identification
Near the end of the post "Old52GMC" mentioned he found the axle code "HI" belonged to a 66' G10 van. (I couldn't find the "HI" code anywhere until I read that post.)
So if you go to the GM Heritage site
GM Vehicle Kits
and open the 1966 Truck information, on page 138 you will find the axle code "HI" belonged to the base axle. On page 59 you will find rear end specs for the G10 rear axle. I believe the base axle had a 3.36:1 ratio.
Searching for the casting number N3833443 was less productive. It only pointed toward 65'-69' GM uses.
Hope this helps.

Randy,

I spent over 20 hours searching where that rear end came front.

Your info not only helped...you nailed it on the head. I can now order the right parts to rebuild the rear brake system.

Wishing you a Happy NEW Year driving OLD vehicles.

joe
