Did GM not have an over head cam straight 6 in the late 60's? It seems to me that I had a friend at the time with one is his car. It seemed pretty hot for a faily small engine. What got me thinking about this is that I have a Jag sedan with a 3.8L (about 232 ci) DOHC straight 6. This car weighs a couple of tons, and flies with this engine.
I was wondering about the GM engine in a truck. I have never seen any references to it, and have searched this site without any luck.

Thanks
David

You are looking for a 1966 pontiac tempest or lemans with the ohc six. Good engine but hard to find. You may have to buy a hole car to get one. Depends how much $$$$$ you want to spend.

if it dosen't need fixed, break it

The Pontiac cammer 6 was made in 230 and 250 cu in sizes. The "sprint" version made 215 HP with a 4 barrel and dual exhausts. Car & Driver magazine put one in a Jag. Purists were not amused.

They can be found in wrecking yards but the cams and cam journals are a weak point and no replacement parts are available. Too bad;it was a good motor.

Awwwwwwwww now yer bringing back memories:
I had a 66 tempest with Lemans option in it. It had a Sprint 6 OHC. It wasn't that great of a motor. Needless to say I blew it up,and changed over to a 389/375 HP. and changed the front coil springs to handle the weight. Also the 6cyl came with a 3 speed manual and I put in a muncy 4 speed. Good luck finding one , not many in the bone yards worth anything.

Thanks for the updates. Gee perhaps I should take the DOHC 6 out of the Jag, it is mated to a 4 speed with electric overdrive smile The Jag (a 63) weighs in over 4200 lb, and flies with this engine. Triple SU carbs. A staggering 8 miles to the imperial gallon. My wife probably would not approve though. Don't know what the purists would say to an english engine in old American Iron.

back in 65 we pulled a ohc jag motor out of a xke and installed a big block chev.
the well drillers next door took de jag engine and used it to drive a irrigation pump in tacna az.
i thinkzz a ohc jag in a stovebolt would be very intresting and you could use a jag rear end smooooth grin

i thinkzz traveling along at terminal velocity will soon wear a body out.

i will not die in shame if i never finish my dreams because my family iz my reality

can't wait until we can bed de ponys down, lite de fire, put on a big ol pot of coffee, and talk about how strong and brave our teams are.

How about a 77 rice grinder 280z engine? a few inches shorter than my 261. Can produce 200+ hp. I have one in the shop it has been a thought.

My brother had a 69 Firebird Sprint with the overhead cam 6, 4 barrel and three speed, great little car. Not enough hp for him so he put 327 vette engine in it. I'd of kept the 6cyl. but i like sixes better any ways. Just my thoughts on this> Big Al wink

I also had a bud with a 69 firebird and the 250 ohc, it was a great car, but as usual, he wanted a v-8. whaever, I liked it, my brothers had Xk140s and XK-e's (coupe and roadster) so I knew that the 6's could be made to go.

I think you should put that jag motor in there - after all - people used to stuff chevy v-8s in the jag sedans all the time when they got sick of lucas electrics, waiting for parts, etc.... :p

Right on Bullfoot! In the days of long ago and far away, we once put a 327 into an Austin Healy 3000 (you could still find one back then, that tell you how long ago it was?). It wouldn't turn very well after that, but it would do second gear wheelies!

BMW has taken the straight six and made art out of making it perform. The 2.5L in my 325i really propels that car, and it still gets 26 mpg. It's an overhead cam slant six with a crossflow head and port fuel injection with dual exhaust. I think it is an aluminum block and head, too. I wonder if there is a BMW head with the same bore spacing as a Chevy 6?
