For helping keep this great
old truck web site
on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Sep 2015 Posts: 89 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Sep 2015 Posts: 89 | My truck has 2 cables going to the rear wheels for the park brake that are froze up solid! I think I can get them out of the mounting brackets but im going to need new cables for sure.
they are 2ft long and have one end threaded with a yoke and a rubber boot to keep debris out and the other end has a fitting for a clevis pin in the front.
before i bring a rusty cable to napa and try for hours looking thru their book while they tell me they dont have anything that old...i thought i'd check on here and see if anyone else knows where to get a cable like that? My park brake is just a lever that pulls the cable to the rear wheels, not the style with the locking hand lever on it.

Harold Is a restoration ever finished? | | | | | Joined: Sep 2015 Posts: 89 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Sep 2015 Posts: 89 | Thanks Harold, im not sure if those would work or not. looks to me like it basically just a covered cable, with 6 inches of metal armor on each end where its clamped, no built in springs or anything, the return force must be generated by the brake shoe return spring forcing the park brake mechanism back is all.
Maybe i'll try soaking them in diesel or something, maybe they would break free.

The reproduction suppliers ignore the big truck market. If a part is not used on 1/2 ton trucks, you are often out in the cold. If the cables are not degraded from rust, I would suggest that you soak them in the penetrant concoction of your choice and work them free. You may have to be patient, but most parts come loose eventually. Try your best to resist the temptation to hurry and break the part you are fixing...

I got a PVC tube & a cap at the hardware store. I filled it with solvent & put the cables in there for a few days. I finally got them freed up. They say money can't buy happiness. It can buy old Chevy trucks though. yeah i know its hard to find alot of these suspension parts, I had to replace my ubolts, finally found the right size for the front from a trailer supply place- actually found a guy online that had the rear ones too for $15 a piece, the big 3/4 x 13inch ones, soon I will be to the cab portion of the truck, im hoping smooth sailing parts wise from there!

Those bellows deteriorate by now. A marine store usually has them for control cables. | | | | | Joined: Sep 2015 Posts: 89 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Sep 2015 Posts: 89 | let me know if you have the cables, i can send you a picture of mine if you need just let me know

I won't be needing them and will sell them as I found NOS ones on Ebay. Send me a PM if interested. I saw some on Ebay not too long ago and will look for them and send the link. I got mine to work by setting up the charcoal grill. After my steak dinner, I placed the cable in the coals. The rust was converted to a dust of sorts and came free with no effort. | | | | | Joined: Oct 2012 Posts: 60 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Oct 2012 Posts: 60 | | | | | | Joined: Oct 2012 Posts: 60 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Oct 2012 Posts: 60 | another option is Inline tube will make them for you if you send them your old one. | | | | | Joined: Sep 2015 Posts: 89 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Sep 2015 Posts: 89 | thanks everyone, just ordered the ones off Ebay! Kind of expensive but it will be nice to have new ones, not something I want failing on the truck!
