Any advice on restoring plated parts like hood hinges, striker plates, bolts, etc? Thanks!

I've been using Cold Galvanize spray paint [very thick zinc coating] and am happy w/ the life span considering the cost of getting the proper plating redone.

Great topic! I'd like to hear more. I have a box of parts I'm going to have plated but haven't looked into the cost yet. On an AD, should this stuff be cadmium plated? Is that what it was originally? Or is is zinc plated? Anybody ever try that zinc plating kit that Eastwood sells?

I've been using the copy cad/zinc kit from Caswell plating and have been very happy with it. Can't do anything big but has been fine for nuts and bolts, clips, small brackets, springs, etc. The work is a little tedious since the parts have to be absolutely clean and free of any rust. My usual procedure is to wire brush the part first followed by sandblasting,a soak in muriatic acid to remove any remaining rust, another wire brushing and then degreasing. I know it sounds like a lot,but if any minute trace of rust is left it will get worse quickly after plating. Probably would be easier to ship it all to a plater, but I've got so many of the original fasteners I'm reusing that either I'd be taking a handful every week or I'd have a huge pile and forget where they all go.Have also been using the black oxide kit from Eastwood using the same procedure and have had good results with it also. www.caswellplating.com
