I need a new hood for my 54 3100 5 window build. went to the truck shop in Anaheim, ca and they only have 47- 53 hoods they don't list 54 and 55,hood springs are listed 47-55. so what is the difference or are 47-55 hoods the same? thanks in advance

Others may disagree but I had friend with a 54 with an earlier hood and it fit like crap . He put an original 54 hood on and it ended the problem .

thanks for the reply, I was told that other than the hood emblem/badge it mounts different on the hood springs. what I find strange is that all AD hood springs are the same.

Don't know cuz I haven't swapped them but the original one on
my
'50 and the original one on my '54 both measure the same. 30"
across the front and flat on the bottom, about 48" in a
straight line from the front to the back and both about 55"
across from a common point under the back across the firewall.
Sure looks to me like they would swap even up.
Like to hear from someone that's actually tried it, even
thought the parts book puts a break in at '53/'54.
I'll bet Tim L. or Brad A. have tried it.

thumbs up Denny, great input. do they mount the same to the hood springs?

I have installed a 54 hood on a 49 cab. It fit perfectly.
The only difference between the 54 and the 47-53 hoods is the lack of recesses for the front emblem holes. The earlier hoods have the recesses. The holes are in the same locations on both hoods, however.
Hoods are not the easiest item to install, especially if they have been damaged. I suspect that may have been the issue with Neverdone's friend.

Another difference (in addition to the difference described by Carl) might be that some A-D years' hoods had side emblem holes for two plates on each side (late 1949 through 1952). I assume there would be extra holes when using single side-emblems?

According to the 1929-55, Parts and Accesories Catalog, the hood is listed as:Panel,Hood Top

It sure seems to imply that the 47-53 should fit your 54. Of course, as the other guys have mentioned, there are different holes for emblems. I do know that the side 3100 call out is the same on a 54 as a 53. I do know from experience that hoods are tricky. They can bend a tweek if not handled correctly when they are off. Hope this helps.

great info Rugo, that's what I needed. I bought a used hood which looked good until it was mounted. one side was perfect while the other side was about 1 1/2" off. turns out it had some damage on the top of the hood that wasn't very noticeable. since I don't want a bondo queen, i'm opting for a new hood. thanks

When we put hoods on the first try is with no latch, hinges, NOTHING, just the bare hood. If it fits the hole then any misalignment from that point on is caused by hinges, latches, etc. If it doesn't fit the hole then the brace rods to the firewall, the shims at the core support, the shims under the core support, the rear often needs to be drawn together or stretched apart, and whatever else is needed for a proper fit. Once the bare hood fits right then add everything else ONE AT A TIME. It saves much time not jumping from one item to another since you will know exactly what causes the misalignment.
