Is there anything special or unusual I have to be aware of with these? I've looked one over and drove it and it seems to have the same rust prone areas that the later style has. Is there anything substantially different other than the ladder frame and solid front axle?

They are prone to serious rust around the lower door hinges. The lower part of the front fenders & sometimes around the headlights.
I personally like the style best of any Chevy pickups, especially the 55-56.
