Hi All,
When I pulled the rear axle bearings and seals on my 54 1/2 ton, there was a plate (closest to the differential) then the seal, then the bearing. Is this the correct orientation for reassembly? I ask because it seems odd, wouldn't the seal be the last item inserted into the axle tube? Does the bearing not need to be lubricated by the rear end oil?
Thanks!!!

You have it right, blumarin,

I bet someone read Replacement 1. backwards (orientated themselves backwards)?

OK, thank you. So I have it right, bearing closest to diff, then seal, then retainer, right?

About three weeks ago I did this job, new axle bearings and seals. What I pulled out was the original stuff from '59.

A leather based seal, the bearing, then the big washer sort of plate (which I think you are terming the retainer?). I have also seen this termed a "deflector".

In that order, looking from the brake shoe side of things toward the pumpkin. Seal, bearing, then deflector is how each side came apart for me.

I re-installed the same order. So far (200 or so miles) it's been OK.
