I have a peeling chrome radiator air dam. (where the hood latch sits atop). This is the only chrome part I have and want to know if I can paint over it. Don't want to go to a chrome plating shop for just the one piece. I tried sandblasting it but it just etches it. Is that enough? Thanks.

Bob,
In my experiance painting over chrome isnt a permanant fix unless the chrome is completely removed, for a quick fix that will probably look ok for a while especially if it doesnt see much rain would be to remove any loose chrome and blend the edges of whats left like you would a paint chip.sandblasting it is a good way to get a surface that that primer and paint will grip.good luck

I'd suggest having it powdercoated. Scuffed chrome doesn't paint well, unless its removed.
If you want a popular color (satin black,...) ask the powdercoat shop if they can add it to a scheduled color run......... most will waive the gun setup fee ( $75 where I go)

I have had pretty good luck with an epoxy primer over chrome. Seems to stick. What about Zero Rust. Seems to stick pretty well. Email them and see what they have to say.

Just an idea but what about taking it to your plater and having the chrome removed. Most plating shop will unplate before they replate. You may be able to get this done for very little cost. Most of the cost of chrome plateing is in the prep and polishing.

Just a thought

Thanks for the replies guys. I had forgotten about powdercoating. A friend of mine powdercoated over a chrome air cleaner and it turned out looking like black chrome. Very cool. Just hope it sticks. I'll also ask some plating shops how much to remove it. Thanks again.
