Went to your web page and can't seem to find it listed, which
cubby hole did you put them in???
Lem has the correct listing in his reply.

One note on these pipes. If you research the numbers you will
find many different numbers for the 1/2 ton tail and exhaust
pipes. The variation was from the 216 to 235/261 and in the
different mufflers and where the tail pipes exit at the bumper.
But.....that bend information should fit with only slight
variation in where the tip of the tail pipe points.

It is not yet listed on my web site:

Exhaust System - Pipe Bending Specs (link given in earlier post in this thread)

My website is due for an update of links and information pages. That most likely won't get done until we are settled in NC (or, until the cold-time of the winter - up here). Sorry.

Regarding where the tip of the tail-pipe points: I bought a supposedly NOS replacement 1954 tail pipe. It's bend matches the 54/55 bend shown in the FAM. That tail-pipe is now on the rolling chassis of my 54 3100 Hydramatic.

The rolling chassis (with all new or rebuilt parts) is now in its new garage in NC.

I plugged the numbers/bend calculations in a program I use. (Something "like" Solid edge/st4). I can't copy the program drawings (facility it's in) and all it does is give you a 3D rotational vantage point of where the bends are. I physically measured it out on my 55.2 3100, and the engine manifold to muffler card appears to be correct for my truck. BUT, there's a lot of room for error in my unscientific measuring. Usually, "50-55" doesn't mean 55 second series, which would be a Task Force. I have the original exhaust section that is located here.

Thin copper tubing is probably good for a mock-up & easier to manipulate . I'll post pictures when we get to try the cards out at a shop.

Update on the muffler I received with my exhaust system for my 1949 3100 1/2 ton Chevrolet truck. Contacted the vendor and the muffler I received is made by AP products part# 421. If you look at their prior to 1969 exhaust products catalog, they list the head pipe muffler and tailpipe back to 1950. I have sent AP products an e-mail asking for photos. Hopefully they will respond. They also list another muffler part# 80065302 that is a round muffler with offset ends. 2" I.D. on the inlet and 1 3/4" O.D. on the outlet. Not sure but I'm guessing this muffler is for the later model AD trucks. It does not appear that AP sells directly to the consumer, so an AP products exhaust dealer would have to be contacted to purchase these items. Hope this is of some help.

Tim,

There were not "offset ends" on 1954 A-D 3100 mufflers.
1954 muffler - no "offset" ends
straight-through design

"offset" ends on 48-53 mufflers
"offset" ends on 1947 mufflers
reverse flow design

There were not "offset ends" on Early Task Force Trucks 1955-2nd mufflers - no offset ends (straight-6s and V-8s)
straight-through design

Tim,

Thank you for the clarification. The muffler that fit my late 49 was a straight through design. The offset muffler they sent would not line up on my truck. The diameter was to large?

Thanks again for the info!

Tim

Tim,

I the reference material you posted concerning the 1948-1949 Chevrolet truck muffler it states that the tailpipe is attached to the muffler with a clamp that attaches to a mount on the frame side rail. What does this mount to the frame side rail look like? Anyone have a photo or drawing of the original exhaust mounting hardware for the AD trucks?

Tim,

I do not know about a tailpipe/muffler clamp to side rail.

Read the last sentence in that paragraph again.
"The back end of this tail pipe is supported by a clamp around the pipe which attaches to the frame side rail."
hanger: end of tail pipe to frame

Tim,

Yep....got all of those mounts and clamps. Just wondering what they meant by the tailpipe at the muffler attaching with a clamp that mounts to a bracket on the frame side rail?? I have never seen this mount either. Anyone know or seen this mounting bracket mentioned in this reference to exhaust mounting in the 48-49 shop manual?

Tim,

Read it again.

The bracket is at the end of the tail pipe.
"Rear" end of the tailpipe - near the rear bumper, if you have a rear bumper.

I show the Chevs of the 40s bracket for the end of the tailpipe.

Hey "Trailer Queen" Tim, if you want to wow the judges, order three of those tail pipe hanger/clamps. One for the its intended purpose, and the other two to be used as muffler clamps. You will need to cut off the hanger portion. It will then be a dead ringer for the original muffler clamps. I haven't seen repros of the muffler clamps.

Carl,
Far from a "trailer queen!" ....but I appreciate the compliment. Naw.... standard stainless steel muffler clamps did the job. Just really wanting to get as much correct info as possible. This "trailer queen" is going to my daughter when she's finished, just want to make her as road safe as possible. As we all know things used to be done right and made to last in America!!

Do it your way, Tim (Carl, and most other posters agree with with that).

My trucks are as close to original appearance as is possible/practical for me (with some "hidden" "upgrades"). I also drive them (or, I will drive the ones being "restored"). I call them rolling museum exhibits. They will also go to my daughter and/or to her offspring, with a good pile of spare parts.

Keep asking your questions.

I priced a tail pipe for the '47 today. The shop says they have the bending card; however, the price quoted was $125.00 to $150.00!

You know, I try to buy local if I can, but this seems a bit pricey to me. I just want the steel pipe, not the gold plated stuff!! ohwell

What are you doing for exhaust system components?

Had this pipe bent up using the Ben Person bending data card 5T430 for a
GM pn.3696161 muffler tail pipe for a 50-55 ¾-ton pickup.

Something just doesn’t look right about the bends that take it over the axle.
Without an original pipe it’s hard to tell if the original pipe was made this way.

Plain tubing, and cost was $50.

I'll have to take copies of those bending cards to the local muffler shop. It doesn't make sense to me that it would cost three times as much for slightly less material; however, the quote was given over the phone. Perhaps, a face-to-face conversation is in order.

This shop is well-known for quality custom work in the area.

Update: I went to the shop today. The owner produced the bending card and quoted me an out the door price of $35.00 for a tail pipe. All is well!
