Is there a difference between a differential cover gasket and a differential carrier gasket? If different thicknesses, is the difference critical on the carrier side?

Note: Felpro and many parts suppliers list Felpro RDS5088 as a differential cover gasket, and RDS5090 as a differential carrier gasket for 47-54. However, these are not the correct gaskets.

The carrier gasket is a thin paper gasket, putting the wrong gasket in can cause tolerance issues.

Thanks. The one I used on carrier side looks about 1/16" thick. Would that cause play in the spider gears? Guess I better redo it.

What it will do is set the axles up at a slight angle, could be hard on the axle bearings.

Third members have been installed with RTV for about 25 years or so. During the transition period we retrofitted the thin paper gaskets with RTV without any problems. I'm sure the RTV was a little thinner than paper. And we have zero leaks with RTV.

I religeously use "The Right Stuff" in lieu of gaskets for everything and absolutely love it. Never a drip of anything gets through it. Expensive but excellent product.

I agree with Chad M regarding Permatex Right Stuff. When prepped properly, you don't even get seepage of oil or grease, let alone a drip. It is somewhat adhesive so I don't use it on things that you anticipate would need to come off, such as a valve cover. It would be perfect for the differential carrier. I have commented on this product before and surprised that few people seem to use it. It is OEM on Caterpillar oilpans and used without a gasket.
