About a week ago I'd poured 5 qts. of oil in my 235 6 cyl. chevy. My problem is it's not even showing on the dipstick.Yes, I made sure the drain plug was in. This engine has never run before and I'm wondering if I've even have the correct dipstick and tube.Could I get one you guys to measure the lenght of the stick, and tube where it starts from the block. I understand it willtake 6 qts. with a filter correct? THANKS. frown

It still should show on the dipstick with 5 quarts IF the stick is correct.

ol'55, I don't know if they made different sizes of oil pans for the 235. I would make sure about that. If the pan you have is the same size I'd check the dipstick to see if it's the same length. Some thing is off, the pan size or dipstick length. Like someone said, it should show on the stick with 5 quarts in the pan. Some one here will be able to give you the length your stick should be. And also probably the out side deminsons of what your oil pan should be. Good luck. Mike

On my 235, the dipstick tube is 6 inches long from the block to top. The dipstick length from the top of the tube to the tip is 15 3/8 inches. The full mark is 13 1/2 inches from the top of the tube. I hope this is of some help to you.

I also think I should change my oil - kinda dirty.

My dipstick from a '53 235 is basically the same as Frets. It is 15 1/8 in. from the stop to the pointy end and 13 5/16 in. from the stop to the full mark. It holds 6 qt. with the filter.

Well I believe I have found my problem here thanks to you amigos. I rechecked my tube and dipstick and I am showing 6.50" on the tube from the block to the top and the stick is only 9.00" long. DA DA no wonder I don't see any oil.I'm about to start the engine and with no oil on the stick I said ah ah.. I'm wondering how the other guy read it, before me? Any way guess I'll go looking for a tube and stick. THANKS AGAIN GANG OL'55.. :p

If you want to run the engine, drain all of the oil out and put in 5 quarts, 6 if you have a filter.

If you think about it we should all go and check our sticks...

Imagine running with a couple of quarts too many. It would be easy for a stick to get changed or broken in all those years.

I ran into this when building my 235. There were at least 3 different pan styles, and 3 different oil pump pickups to match. I'm running a '60 block with a '57 oilpan and pickup, with a '54 dipstick. I had to move/bend the dipstick tube a little to clear the oil pump pickup tube. Now my engine reads full with 5 quarts, no filter.

good luck
